Miriam D. Deming, age 102, passed away Friday, March 23, 2012 at Fisher Senior Care and Rehab Center in Mayville. Miriam was born October 6, 1909 in Akron, the daughter of the late John J. and Ina (Gustafson) Gilbert. Following graduation from high school, she completed a two year program at Grace Nursing School. The former Miriam Gilbert was united in marriage with James H. Deming on November 15, 1932 in Saginaw. He preceded her in death on February 12, 1974. She was a lifelong resident of Tuscola County, growing up in the Akron area. Her family was some of the earliest growers of sugar beets and she helped in the harvest. Mim experienced several milestones throughout her life, two world wars, the suffrage movement, air flight, the depression, the repeal of prohibition. She traveled the world, watched the sunset on Egypts Pyramids, seen the Eiffel Tower, the Panama Canal, and visited her familys homeland of Sweden. The Demings enjoyed traveling, spending their free time riding the trains, seeing the country and the world. After the death of her husband, she continued traveling with friends, in particular with her longtime companion, Esther Smith, who was also a widow, neighbor and friend. Until her retirement, she was employed for thirty-three years at the Michigan Farm Colony, later known as the Caro Regional Center. Miriam spent her working career as a pharmacist assistant and an X-Ray technician. She was an avid storyteller and told of lifes experiences. Mim is survived by a brother, John “Jack” Gilbert of Ontanogan; several nieces and nephews; her special friends, Susan Eremia and Darlene Brown. Throughout the years, she had additional special caregivers, Charlotte Tomlinson and Sharon Allen. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Grace Wolverton, Frances Shannon and Marie Ramsden. A special thank you is in order for the support of her friends and the employees of Fisher Senior Care and Rehab Center in Mayville. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2012 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Pastor Ronald Wigand officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Hills Cemetery in Vanderbilt. Friends may call at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Monday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 3:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Caro Rotary Club Student Scholarship Fund.
