Mitchell G. Schember, age 73, of Unionville, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at McLaren Bay Region in Bay City.
Mitch was born, the oldest of a set of twins, on January 25, 1947. He married the love of his life, Peggy VanBevern, on May 31, 1969. Mitch retired from General Motors as a fork truck driver. He loved hunting, fishing, riding his trike and watching his grandchildren play sports. He was a member of the Sebewaing American Legion Post #293.
Mitch entered the U.S. Navy on Dec. 1967. He served aboard the ship U.S.S. Forrestal CVA-59, making three deployments to the Mediterranean Sea. On the ship, Mitch was one of three Barbers, ran the jewelry store, did shoe repair, dry cleaning and laundry duty. In 1970, he received the ranking of E-5, 2 nd class Petty Officer, along with a letter of Commendation from the commanding officer. He then was in charge of ordering and maintaining supplies to keep the stores running. One of his favorite memories aboard the ship was a week spent in Paris, France. Mitch was Honorably Discharged in October 1971, with a Good Conduct Ribbon.
Mitch is survived by his children: Stefanie (David) Czelada and Chad (fiancé Sharon) Schember; twin brother, Michael (Beverly) Schember; brother, Leroy (fiancé Bonnie Bouza); grandchildren: McKenzie "Sunshine" (fiancé Tanner) McAlpine, Brooklyn "Honey B) Czelada, Jacob Czelada and Kaylee (Dominique) Cohee; and great grandson, Remington Cohee.
Mitch is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Hanna (Gall) Schember; and his wife, Peggy on March 29, 2005.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, a memorial service will be planned for a later date.
Memorial donations may be given to Post 293 Veterans Project Fund.
