Nastia Opanasenko

Nastia Opanasenko, age 98 of Bay Port passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility.

Nastia was born near Konotop and Krolevec, Ukraine sometime in the fall of 1914 as Anastasia Moroz. She was married to Wasyl Opanasenko in 1932.

After working under German occupation for one year, Nastia and her family were taken to Germany in August 1943. They were put to work as slave labor and found their way to the American Zone after the war ended. In 1949 Peter Diachenko sponsored her and her family to come to the United States to work on the family farm in Bay Port. She worked for many years in farming and commercial fishing, and enjoyed gardening and ice fishing.

She attended the Bay Port United Methodist Church for many years.

Nastia is survived by her son Wolodymyr "Walter" Opanasenko of Bay Port, grandsons Larry Opanasenko of Raleigh North Carolina, Terry Opanasenko of Bath, Michael Opanasenko of Owosso, Daniel Opanasenko of Cass City, and Nick Opanasenko of Mt. View, Wyoming; granddaughters Linda Urbanski of Hersey, Cathy Rosales of Lansing, Brenda Currie of Greensboro, North Carolina, Lori Simpson of Cass City, Suzanne Rockwell of Caro, and Cindy Opanasenko of Cass City; step grandchildren Benny Howard and Troy Thompson, both of Bay Port, and Terrie Thompson of Caseville; and many great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Wasyl, sons Mychailo "Mitchell", Nykola "Nick", baby Wolodymyr, still-born twins, grandson Gary, a brother and sister.

The Funeral Service will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, with Rev. Karl L. Ziegler officiating. Burial will be in New Bay Port Cemetery.
