Nellie Sinclair

Nellie Mae Sinclair, age 99 years, of Hastings, formerly of Caro, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Carveth Village in Middleville. She was born on December 25, 1907 at Vassar to the late William and Elizabeth (Borgwell) Opperman. Her parents moved to Wilmot in 1914 where she attended the Wilmot Elementary School. She then attended Caro High School and County Normal. Miss Opperman taught at the Teetzel School and the Pinkerton School near Vassar. In 1932 she married Frank Sinclair, and he preceded her in death. During World War II, she began teaching again at the Proctor School in Sanilac County, and also at the Carolan School and the Deford Elementary School in Tuscola County. Her last 21 years of teaching was in the Owengage Community School. She received her degree and life certificate from Central Michigan University, and retired after 33 years of teaching. She belonged to the retired teachers, Caro United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Nellie was a 4-H leader and Sunday School teacher for many years. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Les) Gosson of Caro and Florence Freeman of Hastings; one daughter-in-law, Myrtle Sinclair of Vassar; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Laurence Opperman of Wilmot; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Tom; two sisters, Nina Opperman and Florence Baskerville; as well as a brother-in-law, Harold Freeman. In accordance with Nellies wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Caro United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Vassar. The family will receive visitors at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Caro United Methodist Church. Arrangements were made by the Collon Funeral Home in Caro.
