Nicholas Scott Berry

Nicholas Scott Berry of Caro, age 41, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Nick was born July 21, 1982, in Caro, the son of David Berry, Jr. and Penny (Trisch) Berry. From a young age he faced several health issues, yet despite the adversity he encountered, he approached life with a resilience that inspired all who knew him. Nick graduated from Caro High School with the class of 2001. Following high school, he worked at Highland Pines and owned his own lawn and landscaping business. Nick devoted countless hours to facilitating events for students, such as the Special Olympics, proms, dances, and bowl-a-thons, ensuring that individuals of all abilities had the opportunity to experience joy, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging. He enjoyed playing poker with his buddies, had a fascination with lighthouses, and in his younger years, liked to bowl. Nick was always very social, loved going to concerts and all types of sporting events, and you could always count on him to have a get-together; grilling out, cooking, and having a good time.

He had an undeniable passion for basketball that extended into coaching for over twenty years. Known as “Coach Berry” to many, Nick found great joy and fulfillment in coaching, sharing his knowledge, and fostering the talents of aspiring athletes of Caro. For the last ten years, he has been spotted on the football field, helping on the chain crew. Nick's passion for helping youth athletes thrive was exemplified through his instrumental role in organizing the Lions Club Youth Summer Basketball Camp. With his calm, cool, and collected coaching demeanor, he not only taught the fundamentals of the game but also instilled invaluable life lessons in his players. His favorite quote, "Don’t give up…Don’t ever give up," echoed in the hearts of those he mentored, serving as a guiding light through challenges both on and off the court. As a testament to Nick’s love of youth sports, he will be honored at this year’s “The Friend of Youth – Meet of Champs.” He also loved voicing the game of the week with Scott Bolsby, especially basketball games. Nick had the most positive attitude and fought until the very end. While Nick’s physical presence may be gone, his spirit will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched and the enduring legacy of kindness and compassion he leaves behind.

Nick is survived by his father and mother, David and Penny; sister & brother-in-law, Natasha & Barry Krueger; grandfather, Wayne Trisch; aunts & uncles, Jackie & Kieran Quinn, Thomas & Marvy Berry, and Donald & Dina Berry; many great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins, and hundreds of friends and fellow athletes. Nick was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather & grandmother, David & Janet Berry, Sr.; maternal grandmother, Kathleen Trisch; special friend, Eddie Crosby.

In keeping with Nick’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Colwood Church in Caro with Rev. Kelly Ball officiating. Nick’s family will be present to receive visitors on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro, and again on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
