Nile Ziehm

Nile Jay Ziehm of Saginaw (formerly of Houghton Lake Heights), age 69, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter, Hope Ziehm, on March 5, 2012, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Brookfield Township to Floyd and Madeline (Good) Ziehm on March 30, 1942. Nile enjoyed farming and worked on highway road construction until health problems led to his early retirement. He resided in Houghton Lake Heights, Michigan for many years after his retirement. Nile took great pleasure in all sporting events, especially those that involved his children and grandchildren. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending Ziehm family reunions and holiday gatherings. Nile enjoyed hunting, playing poker and watching television. He also loved his cup of coffee every morning. His daughter, Ashley, said “Dad was at all, and I mean all, of our sporting events, baby showers, and even came to see us when we all went into labor. He was at every family event no matter the weather. My dad was always there for us.” Nile is survived by nine children, Thomas Ziehm of Grayling, Tammy (Robert) Clos of Farmington Hills, Mary Herman of Bay City, Robin Hanks of Englewood, Colorado, Randall (Michelle) Ziehm of Portsmouth, Ohio, Amy (Jason) Hurren, Hope Ziehm, Ashley Ziehm and Brittnie Ziehm, all of Saginaw; three step-children, Carrie (Tom) Stroebel, Candi Mirelez and Gary LaBelle II, all of Saginaw; thirty-four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; his siblings, Donna (Frank) Sageman of Bad Axe, May Ziehm of Essexville, Bill (Sophie) Ziehm of Fraser, Fred Ziehm of Ubly, Barry (Linda) Ziehm of Ortonville, Leann Rogers of Caro, Phoebe (Jerry) Bernhardt of Caro, Aileen (Bill) Kunisch of Sebewaing, and Roger (Anne) Ziehm of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Jeannine Ziehm of Owendale; and many nieces and nephews. Nile was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Duane Ziehm. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the precious care given to Nile during his illness by Leona Kramer, and also the staff of the Saginaw Chapter of Hospice. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at the Caro Community of Christ Church with Elder Jerry Bernhardt presiding. There will be visitation at the church preceding the service from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Ziehm Family Discretionary Fund.
