Norbert R. Jankowski of Caro, age 87, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016, at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community in Caro, following a brief illness. Norbert was born July 14, 1928, in Detroit, the son of the late Stanley and Antoinette (Brezski) Jankowski. He was a 1946 graduate of Caro High School and served in the U.S. Army in the occupation of Europe following World War II. Norbert was united in marriage with the former Carol Mantey on February 7, 1953, in Caro at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and she preceded him in death on October 13, 2006. Norbert attended bakery school in Minneapolis and worked in the family business with his father until his retirement in 1999. He never met a stranger because he could strike up a conversation with virtually anyone he encountered. Norbert was a champion for downtown businesses in Caro and remained active in the community throughout his life. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro, Caro Knights of Columbus #3224, Caro Rotary Club where he served as president in 1970, Caro American Legion Post #7, Polish Legion of American Veterans (PLAV) and the Caro Planning Commission. He lived for spending time with family and friends, and also enjoyed fly fishing at his cabin on the Manistee River, snow skiing in his younger years, camping, travelling out west and taking care of his three cats. Norbert is survived by three children and their spouses, Stephan & Louise Jankowski of Sandusky, Michigan, Nancy & George Travis of Troy, Michigan, Diane & Tom Sroka of Troy, Michigan; five grandchildren and their spouses, Sarah & Dave Milburn of Clawson, Megan & Mike Frost of Rochester Hills, Adam Jankowski of Silver Spring, Maryland, Kyle Sroka of Mt. Pleasant, Jennifer Sroka of Troy; a much-anticipated great-grandchild expected in June; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Jankowski of Caro, Gretchen Amstutz of Beulah; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Stanley Goetz, Eugenia Jarosz and Alfred Jankowski. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2016, at St. Christopher Parish, Sacred Heart Site in Caro with Rev. Jerzy Dobosz officiating. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
