Olivia Torres age 89 of Lapeer formerly of Elkton, died Tuesday morning, August 16, at Lapeer Regional Medical Center.
She was born October 12, 1921 in Dallas, TX to the late Santos and Consuelo (Garcia) Martinez She moved to Michigan with them when she was a little girl and was the oldest of 16 children.
On February 15, 1941, she was united in marriage to Louis Torres in Sebewaing and they made their home in Elkton. Louis preceded her in death in 1960.
Olivia worked at Hazards Nursing Home in Elkton and the Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. She was also a custodian at Elkton Elementary until 1967, when she moved to Gagetown.
She then became a cook at Hills & Dales Hospital, Cass City retiring in 1985. In 1995, she moved to Lapeer to be with family.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lapeer, a former member and catechism teacher at St. Francis, Pigeon and was one of the founders of the Guadalupe Society at St. Francis.
Surviving are five children, Anita (Alex) Lopez of Lapeer, Louis (Pamela) Torres of Boone NC, Margaret Stevens of Lapeer, Robert Torres of Gagetown and Paul (Elaine) Torres of Midland; Ten grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; siblings, Consuelo Henne of Pigeon, Frank Martinez and Emily Kuhl of San Antonia, TX, Conde Castro of Schertz, TX, Louise Munoz of Battle Creek, Ceseria Birk of Coldwater and Irene Pekelo of Bad Axe.
Preceding her in death were two daughters, Genevieve Crawley and Louise Torres; eight siblings, Paul, Santos, Vincent, Albert, Elessa, Robert and Edward Martinez, and Natalie Soliz.
A funeral mass will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, August 20, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon. Rev. Fr. John Weis, pastor will officiate with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton from 2 to 9 PM Friday and at the church after 10 AM Saturday.
Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Assn.
