Paul L. Naugle

Paul LeRoy Naugle of Caro, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw. Paul was born October 2, 1927 in Goodrich, the son of the late Everett and Ella Merle (Barron) Naugle. He was united in marriage with the former Shirley Krueger on November 23, 1945 in Ohio, and she survives him. Paul proudly served our country in the Merchant Marines and the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was stationed in Austria and discovered a passion for cooking. He was employed as a meat cutter, and later supervisor, at Hygrade Meat Packing. In 1960, the family moved from Waterford to Mayville and re-opened the Mayville Restaurant until 1967, and a second restaurant, Naugle's, from 1970 to 1973. Paul also was employed at Eaton Foundry in Vassar from 1967 until his retirement in 1982. On July 18, 2017 he was honored with a plaque from the Michigan Wood Carvers Association with appreciation of his World War II service. Paul enjoyed setting up at flea markets, cooking for others at the restaurants, reading and watching westerns. Paul is survived by his loving wife of seventy-two years, Shirley Naugle of Caro; three children, Paul Naugle of Mayville and Mississippi, Pamela & Andrew Sopchik of Caro, Robert & Kay Naugle of Texas; eight grandchildren, Candy, Julie, Eric, Teri, Andrew, Jason, Robert, Jr. and Bill; fourteen great-grandchildren; one brother and his wife, Everett & Donna Naugle of Texas; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Patricia Naugle; and six siblings. In keeping with Paul's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in the spring with burial following at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Michigan Parkinsons Foundation or the Alzheimers Association.
