Richard Lee Curtis of Caro, formerly of Vassar, age 78, passed away peacefully in his sleep with his loving wife and daughter by his side on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Richard was born March 6, 1944 in Caro, the son of the late Loyal and Helen (Banas) Curtis. Richard served in the U.S. Army for three years while stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge, Richard started working for General Cable in Cass City, then went on to work for General Motors, including Fisher Body and Buick City in Flint, retiring after thirty-four years. In the summer of 1965, he met the love of his life, Mary Zelkowski. They were united in marriage on June 24, 1967 in Caro. In their almost fifty-five years of marriage, they lived in Vassar where Richard and Mary, together with family and friends, built the house they called home. It was there they raised their three children, Dan, Penny, and Randy, moving to Caro in 2005. In these later years came the grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he cherished and was so proud of. Richard found great pleasure in his homemade deer blind and talked about how he loved being outside in it. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren hunting and fishing, and even built a go-kart for his kids. Richard loved to tell stories about hunting and fishing and especially his "back when I was in Germany" stories. Richard and Mary attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro. Left to cherish Richard's memory are his loving wife, Mary Curtis; three children, Dan (Stacy) Curtis, Penny Curtis, Randy (Serena Healy) Curtis; grandchildren, Rebecca Curtis and Cody Curtis, Christian and Tylor Curtis, Trevor, Brittney, Kasia Giddings and Lindsay Schotter; great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Layne, Lenyx, Alliah, Everlie, Aubriella, and another great-granddaughter to be born soon; siblings, Donna Mullin, Harriett Skelton, Laura (Dwight) Garrett, George (Linda) Curtis, Wally Curtis; sister-in-law, Brenda Zelkowski; and many cherished nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Karen Robinson; and brothers-in-law, Michael Mullin and David Zelkowski. In keeping with Richard's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro with Rev.
