Richard C. Hofmeister of Caro, age 69, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw. Dick was born June 9, 1947 in Bay City, the son of the late Milton & Leona (Pierce) Hofmeister. He graduated from Owendale-Gagetown High School with the class of 1965 and went on to attend Michigan State University. He later enlisted with the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. Dick's working years were spent with the Tuscola County Sheriff's Department, a career that spanned over forty years of service on road patrol, in dispatch and finally with the Information Technology Department, retiring in 2012. On October 20, 1995, he was united in marriage with the former Karen Salgat at the Caro United Methodist Church. Quiet and kind by nature, he could be counted on for his abiding constancy and patience. As a parent, his home was a refuge for countless kids. More recently, his home was a place of puzzles, Legos, popcorn and lawnmower rides for his grandchildren. Dick's spare time was spent with his dogs, Jake and Gracie, gardening, caring for his yard and watching sports, especially MSU. He was a member of the Municipal Employees Retirement System, Fraternal Order of Police, and was a private pilot. Dick is survived by his wife, Karen Hofmeister of Caro; two children and their spouses, Brandon & Michelle Hofmeister of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Amie & Aaron Hildinger of Caro; nine grandchildren, Devin, Shelby, Mikaila, Molly, Maggie, Macy, Aaron, Jr., Sabrina, Keely; one great-grandson, Lucas; siblings and their spouses, Carol & David Norts of Knoxville, Tennessee, Patricia Wright of Frankenmuth, Kenneth & Andrea Hofmeister of Thornton, Colorado; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by two step-sons, Scott and Jeff Salgat. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 6, 2017 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. Michele Hile officiating. Burial will follow at the Ellington Township Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund, c/o Karen Hofmeister, 205 West Sherman Street, Caro, MI 48723.
