Richard "Dick" Asher Poppe

Richard "Dick" Poppe of Bay City, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at McLaren Bay Region after a courageous battle with lymphoma. Dick was born August 29, 1937 in Caro, the youngest of four to the late Edwin and Goldie (Faedie) Poppe. He grew up in Caro, delivering newspapers, working at Dibble's 5 & 10 store, and was a projectionist at The Strand Theater. Dick graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1955 and went on to obtain his degree in cost accounting from Northeastern School of Commerce. It was there Dick met the love of his life, the former Joyce Welther of Sebewaing. They dated for several years and were united in marriage on February 15, 1958 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. Dick and Joyce made their home in Bay City and together they shared almost sixty-five years of marriage, three wonderful sons, and countless memories. Dick started his career at Kern's of Saginaw as a bookkeeper, went on to hold several positions at various companies, and ended his career at Saginaw Eaton Credit Union as CEO, retiring in 2000. Dick attended Zion Lutheran Church in Bay City, where he was active in the school's athletic program, working with the boys' basketball teams and served as Assistant Scout Master for Zion's Boy Scout troop. He was an active member of the Bay City Eagles Club, serving as president and was secretary of Carrolton/Zilwaukee Eagles Club. Dick enjoyed pop-up camping with his young family, traveling to many theme parks and campgrounds throughout Michigan. As his family grew up and left home, Dick and Joyce enjoyed traveling with Joyce's brother and his wife, Larry and Nancy Welther, spending many winters in Florida. He enjoyed Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, and classic country music. Dick's loving and caring memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Dick leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Joyce; sons, Brian Poppe of Bay City, Dale & Cheril Poppe of Lapeer, and Gary & Michelle Poppe of Saginaw. He will be dearly missed by his four grandchildren, Nickolas Poppe, Stephen (Alissa & little Sawyer) Poppe, Rachael (Eric) Boback, and Danielle Poppe.
