Richard "Dutch" Thorp of Caro, age 89, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2021 at Covenant Health Care - Cooper in Saginaw, following a brief illness. Dutch was born September 10, 1932 in Caro, the son of the late Paul J. & Ella F. (Curry) Thorp. He graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1950 and was drafted into the U.S. Army shortly after. While in the service, Dutch was stationed in Korea as an infantry machine gunner. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and returned to Caro to work on the family farm. On January 28, 1956, he was united in marriage with the former Nila R. Wright, and the couple cherished more than fifty-six years of marriage before her death on April 30, 2012. The majority of Dutch's working years were spent with the Perry Printing Company in Flint as a forklift operator, as well as time spent at the Co-Op Elevator in Caro. He retired in the early ‘80s, but continued to stay active with the Kingston Wesleyan Church and the Caro VFW Post 4164. He was happiest outdoors or tinkering in his pole barn, watching baseball in the spring, or football in the fall. Dutch is survived by two children, Jim Thorp and Karen Thorp, both of Caro; one brother and his wife, Gerald & Sharon Thorp of Caro; sister-in-law, Eileen Thorp of Caro; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Dutch was preceded in death by two brothers, LaVerne "Jim" Thorp, Douglas Thorp; and sister-in-law, Barbara Thorp. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 24, 2021 at the Kingston Wesleyan Church with Pastor Len Wyatt officiating. Burial with military honors afforded by the U.S. Army and the Caro VFW Post 4164 will follow at Indianfields Township Cemetery in Caro. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Kingston Wesleyan Church or the Caro VFW Post 4164.
