Robert Henry George, age 88, of North Branch, formerly of Franklin, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2019 at his home, surrounded by his family. Robert was the middle child of three born on May 1, 1930 in Detroit to the late Henry and Mildred (Mason) George. Robert enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at the naval air reserve at Grosse Isle Air Station, MI. He was on active duty in the Korean War where he served in the Pacific Fleet Command in San Diego, California. Robert was the founder of the Phi Psi Fraternity at Michigan State College (University), and was its first president. He graduated from Michigan State College. On October 12, 1963, he married his only love, Suzette Hower Lemmon, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They started their journey together in Franklin, Michigan. Robert was employed as an engineer for General Motors Corporation. He also was the owner of the family business Mason's Decoy Factory. Robert was an avid historian and advocated for historic legislation and created the first historic district in Michigan in Franklin. Robert was a volunteer firefighter where he was a Captain. Robert spent his entire life waterfowl hunting and advocating for waterfowl conservation with his son and son-in-law, family and friends. He enjoyed his time storytelling and spending time with his children and grandchildren whenever he could. Robert is survived by his wife, Suzette Hower Lemmon; two children, Holly Lemmon (George) Myers and son-in-law Todd Myers of North Branch, and Robert Mason George of Grosse Pointe Park; three grandchildren, Elizabeth. Henry and William; along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by one sister, Susanne (George) Handley; one brother, William Mason George; and one nephew, Henry George. A celebration of time will be held in May of 2019 at the home of Robert and Suzette George. In lieu, of flowers, donations can be made to a local animal shelter or waterfowl conservation group in his name.
