Robert Charles Heidt

Robert Charles Heidt, age 90, of Unionville, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2020 at Medallion Village in Sebewaing after a short illness.

Bob was born February 11, 1930 in Novi, Michigan to Julius Theodore and Leota Mae (Neal) Heidt.  In 1929, the family farm on Heidt Road (named for his Grandpa, Charles Heidt) near Bay Park/Unionville, fell victim to flooding which forced Julius, his wife and children to seek work in the Detroit area where Bob was born.  They moved back to the farm in 1931 as Julius lost his job due to The Great Depression, allowing Bob to grow up near Bay Park where his Grandpa and Grandma Neal also lived and owned the General Store, and where he would attend school through the 8th grade. He always told stories of himself as a young man helping at the store and having to harvest ice off the bay to store in the ice house and deliver to the people who came to vacation there in the summer, and working on the farm and orchards owned by his Grandpa Heidt.

He went to Unionville High School graduating in 1947. After graduating he went to work at Meisel Hardware in Bay City and then in 1951 began working at Dow Chemical in Bay City, starting in the foundry and then transferring to plastic lined pipe in 1952 where he would remain until his retirement in 1992.

Bob met the love of his life, Sally, in 1946 in Sebewaing through mutual friends, and for 70 years they never faltered in their devotion to each other.  He married Sally Louise Rosborough on November 12, 1949 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Parsonage in Unionville.  Together they celebrated 66 years of marriage before her death on February 8, 2016.

He was a dedicated husband and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He enjoyed tinkering in his garage with small woodworking projects and especially enjoyed making bird houses and feeders so he could enjoy another favorite pastime, bird watching. He also liked watching Detroit Tigers Baseball and Lions Football, and visiting the family cabin in Grayling that his parents purchased in 1948.  It was the place he loved most in the world and holds many wonderful memories for our family.  We are so thankful to have been able to have had so much time with him.

He is survived by children:  Lynette (Bill) Eremia of Unionville, Bob (Brook) Heidt and Son-in-Law Jeff Horst all of Sebewaing; Grandchildren: Bill (Eric Pflum) Eremia of Chicago, April (Josh) Gremel, Jamie Horst all of Unionville, Chris (Amanda) Horst of Akron, Steven Heidt of Bay City and Allison (Jordan) Dickson of Reese; Great-Grandchildren: Anna & Jacob Gremel, Ethan & Olivia Pflum-Eremia, and Ralphie, Mason, Bella, Christopher & Charlotte Horst; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sally Louise and loving daughter Constance May Horst; also his parents, Julius & Leota and siblings: Ted Heidt and Nila DeWolf.

Public visitation will be Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Juengel & Mellendorf Funeral Home in Sebewaing from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with a private funeral service to follow. Due to current restrictions there will be a 10 person limit inside the building during visitation hours.

Private burial will take place at Columbia Township Cemetery, Unionville.
