Robert Marcene Mason, age 92, passed away on June 9, 2023. He was born on November 20, 1930, to George and Cora (Hendrick) Mason in Caro. He moved to Detroit as a young man and graduated from Wilbur Wright High School. He worked in the automotive industry before joining the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Korea from 1951-1953 where he was part of an engineering battalion. After the war, he returned to Detroit and began working at the Hydra-Matic Division of General Motors in Ypsilanti where he met his future wife, Emma. The former Emma Foerster and Robert were married on July 30, 1955, in Novi. In 1957 they completed their house on Sutton Road and lived there for over 60 years. In 1962, Robert began working for Fingerle Lumber Company in Ann Arbor where he worked in sales and management until his retirement in 1995. Robert was passionate about serving others and was involved in many organizations, most notably the Masonic Golden Rule 159 7EM 32nd, the Shriners, the Marine Corps League of Washtenaw and the VFW. He served in the honor guard for the Marine Corps league, sponsored children to attend the Shrine Circus and volunteered hundreds of hours per year to these organizations. He provided transportation to and from hospitals for treatment, diseases, birth defects, burns and orthopedic injuries. In addition, he frequently volunteered at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor. He loved hunting, fishing, restoring automobiles, NASCAR, Indy Racing, antiquing and refinishing furniture. He was active at the Liberty Swim Club for many years. Robert was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brothers, Norman and Donald Mason. He is survived by his brother, George of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, along with many nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of life on June 23, 2023, at Weber's Restaurant, 3050 Jackson Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the Ellington Township Cemetery located on the corner of East Dutcher Road and Hurds Corner Road, in Caro, Michigan 48723. Military honors will be afforded by the U.S. Marine Corps and Caro American Legion Post #7. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to the VA Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
