Robert S. Tolles

Robert Stevenson Tolles, age 91, of Pigeon (Caseville Township), passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon.
Robert was born in West Haven, Connecticut on September 17, 1921, the son of James Merwin Tolles and Catherine Wright Stevenson Tolles. He attended Yale University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 1942 and a Bachelor of Engineering in 1947.
Major Robert Stevenson Tolles was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving 27 months overseas in WWII. He saw action at Treasury Islands, Solomon Islands, Guam, and Iwo Jima, and received a Silver Star while in action in Bougainville.
He worked as a certified engineer for Cunningham Limp in Detroit, Michigan for many years. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon.
He married Evelyn Ellouise Curfman on November 28, 1945 in Coconut Grove (Dade County), Florida. She preceded him in death on June 20, 2009. They were married for more than 63 years.
Robert is survived by his two children, Thomas Randolph (Barbara Lynn) Tolles of Pigeon and Sally Stevenson (Robert Bruce) Springstead of Brighton; daughter-in-law, Joan Messenger Tolles of Dayton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Robert Stevenson Tolles, Jr.; siblings, Catherine Virginia Tolles Herman (John C. Herman III), James Stevenson Tolles (Shirley Norton Tolles) and Captain Merwin Wilson Tolles (Jane Clarke Tolles).
The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon, with Rev. John K. Benissan, pastor, officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow at Grandlawn Cemetery.
