Rodney L. "Rod" Brewer, age 53 of Fairfield Township, Michigan, passed away February 29, 2012.
He was born in Toledo, Ohio on July 29, 1958. At 17 years old, the U.S. Army called his name. Rod received an honorable discharge in 1983. While working with the Army Corps of Engineers, he was approached by Warden Gluch to apply to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Rod was helping build the firing range and pond on the prison's property. In 2009, with 20 years of service, Rod retired from the prison system. In his retirement, a complicated jigsaw puzzle didn't stand a chance.
He loved being outdoors whether it was mowing the lawn, splitting wood or just "b.s.-ing" with the neighbors Gary and Dave. The Internet was his lifeline to friends he made while being a proud member of the Patriot Guard Riders. Rod never met a stranger. He was always willing to lend a hand. Vacationing in the motor home with his wife, mother-in-law and the dogs was always a highlight of his life.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janice; beloved mother-in-law, Margaret Ann Schwalm; daughter, Veronica; and two grandchildren, Richard III and Jillian; plus brothers and sisters, his "foster family", Dad Bob, Mom GiGi, brothers, Jim and Jeff, and sisters, Patty and Miriam; special family and friends, Rob, Bernie, Rob Jr., Tom, Ben, Jon Schwalm; Lynne, Rick, Jennifer and Bethany Benson; Norm and Ila Lorentz; Carol, Jim, Sara and Jamie Stein; Susanna, Gary, Bradley and Julia Allen; Heather, Matt and Chris and "Grandpa Elmo" to Ian, Ethan and Miriam Rick; and his dogs, 44-Magnum, Cleopatra, Tequila and Ozzee.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. May 19, 2012 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Rod's "foster mother", Rev. Georginia "GiGi" Mawer will officiate. Burial will follow at Grandlawn Cemetery.
Friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday, May 19 beginning at 1:30 p.m.
