Ruth I. Gilbert age 87, of Grant Twp. near Elkton died peacefully Wednesday at her home.
She was born January 11, 1929 in Chandler Twp. at the home of her parents, the late David and Ann (Heck) Thompson and grew up on the family farm.
On September 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Charles W. Gilbert at the Presbyterian parsonage in Bad Axe. They lived in Chandler Twp. for five years before moving into Elkton in 1951. While in Elkton, she worked at Active Industries 17 years. In 1976, she left Active and they moved to Grant Twp. After Chuck’s death in January of 1995, she lost her home to a fire. She rebuilt and remained on the farm the past 21 years on her own.
Ruth was a member of the Community Wesleyan Church, Elkton and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and loved painting with oils.
Surviving are four children, Marge Gagnon of Casa Grande, AZ, Charles “Bud” (Sally) Gilbert of Fenton, Derrick (Debra) Gilbert of Elkton and James (Kris) Gilbert of Pigeon; eight grandchildren, Brian, Jon, Chuck, Melissa (Scott), Dave (Hope), TJ (Megan), Zack and Stephanie (Nick); two great grandchildren, Alexis and James; sisters-in-law, Alice Gilbert of Chandler Twp and Nancy (Bill) Chappel of Pinnebog and her brother-in-law, Jim Champagne of Elkton.
Preceding her in death were two sons, Eric and John; five brothers, Raymond, Irvin, Hank, Lawrence and Bob Thompson and three sisters, Mary Hazard, Zelma Bauer and Bessie Champagne.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Monday, March 21, at the Community Wesleyan Church, Elkton. Rev. Ean Green, pastor will officiate with burial in Chandler Twp. (Souletown) Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton from 2 to 8 PM Sunday and at the church after 10 AM Monday.
Memorial gifts may be given to her church
