Sheridan P. "Shay" Roman

March 8, 1923 — June 21, 2011

Sheridan (Shay) Penn Roman, age 88 previously of the Traverse City area, passed away June 21, 2011 due to post stroke complications in the Lake Orion Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Centre.
He was born on March 8, 1923 in Benld, IL. Shay’s family moved to Highland Park in 1924, where he grew up.
He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 – 1945. Stationed in Italy, Shay flew 50 missions in B-24 Liberators over Germany (the European Theater) as Flight Engineer and Waist Gunner. After the war, he married Beverly Magnuson of Detroit on October 18, 1947, and started their family while attending Wayne State University, where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1954, they moved to Ferndale Michigan, and raised their family.
Shay was employed by Michigan Consolidated Gas Company for 32 years, where starting as a junior engineer. He worked several years in Gas Production, the land and tax division and retired at age 55 after 15 years as Manager of Building Operations and Maintenance, at their headquarters building located at One Woodward Ave. in Detroit.
He moved to Wheaton, IL in 1979 and worked in Chicago as manager of Building Operations and Maintenance for First National Bank of Chicago at their 60-story world headquarters, retiring in 1986, at age 63 and moved to Traverse City. There, he took 5-years to design and build his retirement home, which he enjoyed for the next 20-years.
Shay was always active in his church and community. At church, he served as usher, deacon, trustee, carpenter, facility advisor and faithful servant. In past years, he served on city plan commissions, was active in Cub Scouts and school fairs. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, backpacking, downhill skiing, golf and wood working. Above all he enjoyed his family and friends.
Surviving are sons, Michael (Jackie) of Oxford, Peter of Aurora, IL, and John (Marcia) of Warrenville, IL; was a wonderful grandfather to Geoffrey Roman (Leigh Baltzer) of MA, Andrea (Michael) Miller of NM, Daniel, Richard, Samuel, and Anthony Roman of IL; and great grandfather to Fisher of MA; two sisters, Velma McNaughton of Pigeon and Shirley (Robert) Schlorff of Port Austin, along with several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly in 2006, after 59 years of marriage.

Memorial services will be conducted 10:00 AM Sunday, July 17 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel,5495 Pigeon Road, Elkton. Interment will be in the Prayer Garden at the Traverse City Presbyterian Church.
