Shirley Jean Martindale

Shirley Jean (Sommerfield) Martindale of Caro, age 75, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord on Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Country Comfort AFC home, surrounded by her family. Shirley was born August 13, 1945 in Hawes Township, Lincoln, Michigan. Following high school, she was a wife and mother and later completed studies at St. Clair Community College to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Shirley served as a nurse at the Caro (Regional) Center for twelve years, followed by several healthcare agencies. Her favorite job was her role as the school nurse at McComb Elementary School, where she also served as a classroom volunteer after her retirement. Starting in her late 40's, she also raised her granddaughter, Jessica. Shirley enjoyed square dancing in her younger years, and in later years danced in her kitchen to polka music and gospel quartets. She was a nature and animal lover who especially liked feeding and watching birds. Shirley's strong, joyful, and vocal faith was a core part of her identity. She was a long-time member at Caro Assembly of God, where you could find her sitting in the front row of Bible studies and participating in services with exuberant worship. At home, she listened to TBN and spent extended time in prayer and personal Bible study. Shirley was also known for her generous heart. She constantly encouraged and supported her family and friends and delighted in meeting the needs of others. Left to cherish Shirley's legacy are her son, Ken Sommerfield; grandchildren, Jessica Sommerfield, Travis Sommerfield, and Sarah Sommerfield; brother, Carl Mahalak; nieces, Rebecca (Dawson) O'Dell, Dawn (Martindale) Zuhlke, Debbie (Martindale) Zilisch, Katey (Martindale) Pertkins, and Cheryl (Mahalak) Burris; nephews, Bryon Dawson, Bob Altman, Michael Martindale, and Paul Martindale; several great-nephews and nieces, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian and William Martindale; son, Forrest Sommerfield; brothers, Paul and Harold Martindale; sister, Violet (Vi) Dawson; and nephew, Donnie Dawson. In keeping with Shirley's wishes, cremation has taken place.
