Shirley I. McDonald of Akron, age 88, passed away Friday, August 21, 2020 at United Hospice Service of Marlette Regional Hospital in Marlette. Shirley was born January 4, 1932 in Akron, the daughter of the late Fred and Bessie (Ingham) Davis. She was united in marriage with Leslie A. McDonald on September 4, 1954 in Akron and he preceded her in death January of 1992. Shirley, a lifelong resident of Akron, graduated from Akron High School and dedicated her life to serving her community which included fifty years of service to Akron Township serving as the sexton for both Demorest and Hickory Island Cemeteries. She also worked for the Village of Akron for more than thirty years and spent many years cleaning the Presbyterian Church in Fairgrove, as well as many other businesses and family homes. Shirley also worked in the cafeteria at Akron-Fairgrove schools for many years. Most important though, was her love and commitment to family, especially her great-grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her granddaughter and her husband, Teri & Tracy Nusz of Akron; three great-grandchildren, Michaela, Mackenzie, and Tristan Nusz, all of Akron; sister-in-law, Mary Faye Davis of Akron; brother-in-law, Clarence Haag of Sebewaing; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Romain, in December of 2014; and her siblings, Marie, Raymond, Robert, Clair, Clara, Rollin, and Donna. In keeping with Shirley's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Demorest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Shirley McDonald Family Discretionary Fund, c/o Teri Nusz, 205 West Sherman Street, Caro, MI 48723. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you for the kind and tender care Shirley received at United Hospice of Marlette.
