Shirley Jean Powell

Shirley Jean Powell of Mayville, age 83 years, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Fisher Convalescent Home in Mayville following a lingering illness. Shirley was born October 12, 1929 in Flint, the daughter of the late Forest & Hazel (Laidlaw) Wilmot. She grew up in the Wilmot area and graduated from Kingston High School with the class of 1947. Shirley was united in marriage with Donald Powell on June 10, 1950 in Kingston. He preceded her in death on January 9, 1994 in Lum. Shirley was employed in a variety of jobs, both locally and in the Detroit area, before she dedicated her time raising a family of five children. During her free time, Shirley enjoyed quilting, traveling, collecting and dealing antiques, also she enjoyed flower gardening and was a past member of the Lapeer Horticultural Club. She enjoyed watching the variety of birds that arrived at her feeders, loved babies and children, and all her pets that included dogs, cats and chickens. Shirley is survived by one son and three daughters, Russell Powell of Lum, Jennie Powell of Caro, Marlos and her husband, Phil Scrimger of Columbiaville, Yvonne Sterner of Brighton; five grandchildren, Donica Zazzi, Cody Mattila, Keith Scrimger, Brett Sterner, Michelle Zielinski; four great grandchildren; one sister Joyce Barrons; two brothers, Wally Wilmot, Robert Wilmot and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by one son Steven Donald Powell, one granddaughter, Jamie Powell, one son-in-law, Thomas Sterner and by three sisters, Donna Evertt, Winifred Boyne and Pearl Allen. In keeping with Shirley's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. Gregg Mayberry officiating.
