Susan Kay Herringshaw

Susan Kay Herringshaw, age 74, said goodbye to her earthly home on July 8, 2021 after a short battle with cancer. Her loving husband, niece and nephew were by her side as she made her journey to her Heavenly home. Susan is proceeded in death by her son, Michael Hutchinson, and parents Stanley and Wanda VanVliet. Susan is survived by her loving husband, Doug; siblings, Kathy (Dallas) Nichols of Snover, Richard (Mary) VanVliet of Cass City, Christine Little of Cass City; step-children, Heather (Lawrence) Baker, Christopher (Samantha) Herringshaw and Tobin (Amy) Herringshaw; beloved nieces and nephews, Deanna (Steve), Andy (Lee), Lindy, Kelli (Kurt), Bryce (Dawn), Megan, Josh (Amy), and Ashley (Nick); as well as many grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews. Susan was a loving mother, wife, grandma and aunt. She valued her family above all else. She was selfless, generous, gentle and kind. To know her was to love her deeply. Susan was born on May 31, 1947 to Stanley and Wanda (Bard) Van Vliet. She grew up with her three siblings on the family farm. While she was not keen on helping in the barns, she certainly enjoyed helping her mother with the housework and cooking. Susan was a great student and involved in many clubs. She even dated our famous town astronaut, Brewster Shaw, in high school! She graduated from Cass City High School in 1965 with honors. She then went on to business school in Bay City. She worked for Yeo & Yeo CPA in Marlette for many years. She was also secretary to the principal at Cass City High School and ran the restaurant at Rolling Hills Golf Course. While she loved all of these roles, her true passion was for teaching so she returned to college and earned her degree. She taught Special Education for Bad Axe Jr/Sr High School until her retirement in 2007. After retirement, she and Doug spent their winters in Florida where they quickly became part of a loving community. Susan loved knitting sweaters, hats, scarves, socks and mittens. She knitted many pairs of mittens and hats for donation to The Mitten Tree, helping those in need. Her other hobbies included sewing, quilting, reading (Book Club), golfing, traveling, and spending time with/entertaining family and friends. She loved blueberry picking all season, every year for friends and family at Turner's Blueberry Farm. The farm will surely miss her. Susan loved flowers, spending many hours keeping her flower gardens looking immaculate. She loved the beach as well, whether it be in Michigan or in Florida. She often collected shells, driftwood and sea glass with her family and dear friend, Linda. Everything Susan did in life was done with love, and she made a great impact in the lives of many. Her family plans to honor her & let her legacy live on by doing the same.
