Susan Mae Publow

Susan Mae Publow of Essexville, age 70, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, leaving behind a family who loved her deeply and will miss her beyond words. Sue was born on July 10, 1955 in Columbus, Georgia, the daughter of the late Richard and Betty (Brooks) Publow.

Sue was truly one of a kind, a wonderful woman with a big heart, an honest spirit, and a kindness that touched everyone who knew her. She was the best mom, nana, and partner anyone could ever ask for. Her family was her world, and she dedicated her life to loving, supporting, and caring for them. Nothing brought her more happiness than spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandson, creating memories that will be cherished forever.

Sue was also an incredible cook. Whether it was a family gathering or a simple dinner at home, she showed her love through her cooking; especially her beans! Sue had a passion for life and enjoyed the simple pleasures that made her happiest. She loved playing bingo and spending time at the casino, where her remarkable luck often seemed impossible to beat. Whether it was a bingo card or a slot machine, Sue had a knack for winning and always enjoyed the excitement and fun of the game.

For more than twenty years, Sue shared her life with Chris Shorkey. Their relationship was built on love, laughter, loyalty, and a healthy dose of honesty. Sue often joked that Chris was her "biggest pain in the ass," and she was never afraid to tell him exactly that. But beneath the teasing was a deep and lasting love. Together, they built a life full of memories, companionship, and taking many trips all over Michigan and the United States, often on the Harley. Sue was not only an amazing partner but the best partner in the world.

She will be remembered for her strength, humor, honesty, generosity, and the immense love she gave to everyone around her. She was the kind of person who made others feel welcome, cared for, and loved. Sue was special in every sense of the word, and there will never be another quite like her.

Sue leaves to cherish her memory, her fiancé, Chris Shorkey; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa & Billy Hartwig; son, Johnathan Publow; grandchildren, Alycia Hartwig and Brady Hartwig; great-grandson, Liam Boughter; brother and sister-in-law, Russell & Kim Publow; many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Jenine Hadd; brother, Richard Publow; and her ex-husband of twenty-three years, Tim Hayes.

She was deeply loved and will be missed. Her laughter, cooking, honesty, big heart, and unconditional love will remain in the hearts of her family forever.

In keeping with Sue’s wishes, cremation has taken place and family and friends are planning a Celebration of Life on her birthday. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorial contributions to the wishes of the family, c/o Lisa Hartwig.
