Susan Kaye Szcygiel of Kingston, age 68, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 18, 2025, at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Born on April 25, 1957, Susan was the beloved daughter of the late Arthur and Doris (Fifield) Britton. She graduated from Kingston High School in 1975 and, just two years later, began what would become a long and dedicated career at Kingston State Bank, later known as Independent Bank.
Susan’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. Over the years, she attended both Dayton Center Church and Caro First Baptist Church. Whether organizing an event or simply offering a helping hand, Susan was known for her servant’s heart and joyful spirit. She loved planning gatherings and was always the first to volunteer a dish, especially her famous taco salad and mostaccioli, which became cherished staples among friends and family. Her grandchildren will forever remember the sweet tradition of her beloved "cow pie" cookies, also known as no-bakes. A gifted musician, Susan found joy and expression through music from a young age. She played the trumpet throughout her life, sharing her passion with those around her.
Above all, Susan's greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Rebekah and Curt Gabes; and her treasured grandchildren, Brady, Madeline, and Grayson. Also surviving are her son, Philip Szcygiel, and his children. Susan is lovingly remembered by her brothers and their spouses, Terry and Linda Britton of Macomb, and Mark and Renee Britton of Kingston; along with her former sister-in-law, Kerri Britton of Caro.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Dayton Center Church, 3633 Phelps Lake Road, Silverwood, with her brother, Terry Britton, officiating. Susan’s family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Friday, August 22, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and again at the church on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Immediately following the service, the family invites you to join us for a luncheon in her honor.
Susan’s life was marked by kindness, generosity, and faith. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
