Thelma Deering

Thelma Minnie Deering, age 93, of Caro, died on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility. She was born on February 14, 1918 in Cass City to the late Andrew and Hazel (Haight) Barnes. She was a lifelong resident of Tuscola County. Thelma attended Cass City Schools, and on April 14, 1934 she was united in marriage to John J. Deering in Flint. He preceded her in death on July 8, 1987. She and her husband owned and operated Johnnys Drive-In in Caro and an adjacent retail grocery store. For 40 years, the Deerings enjoyed winters in Florida. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro. In addition to loving people, she liked the challenge of playing bridge. She is survived by one daughter, Trudie (Dallas) Schlaud of Alger; eight grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Naomi Barnes of Cass City; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Monalee McCrea and Enid Mudson; and her siblings, Victor, Juanita, Phyllis, Enid, and Andy. A memorial service will be held at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Cameron Steele officiating. Cremation has taken place with burial at Indianfields Township Cemetery following the service. There will be no visitation at the Collon Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Tuscola County Medical Care Facility or Heartland Hospice.
