Theodore "Ted" Ronald Powell

Theodore “Ted” Ronald Powell of Brown City, age 75, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 while at United Hospice Service of Marlette. He was born on August 25, 1951 in Pontiac, the son of the late Theodore and Dorothy (Hudson) Powell. Ted grew up in Pontiac, where he spent his younger years before moving to Caro in early adulthood.

His time in Pontiac included eight years working at General Motors, a job that became an important part of his early working life. When he made the move to Caro, he began a new chapter, taking a position as a bus driver for Caro Community Schools. Ted truly enjoyed his time behind the wheel and, more importantly, the opportunity to be a familiar and friendly face to the students and families in the community. He remained with Caro Community Schools for nearly ten years before retiring.

He married Debra Sue (Dunevent) Powell on September 7, 1985, Debra preceded him in death on June 9, 2023. As their children were growing up, Ted especially enjoyed spending time with them outdoors. Camping trips were a favorite, often shared with his friends and their families. Weekends would bring everyone together, with their campers and campfires, good conversation, and long summer evenings spent enjoying one another’s company.

Ted had a particular appreciation for the simple pleasures of summer. Whenever the weather was warm, he could often be found outside, enjoying the sunshine and making the most of the season. He loved to fish and looked forward to time spent near the water, where he could relax and enjoy the outdoors. He also enjoyed riding his golf cart around the community.

He was also a natural tinkerer, if something needed fixing or mending, Ted was usually ready to give it a try. Whether it was a small repair or a project that required a little more patience, he enjoyed working with his hands and finding a way to make things work again.

And, of course, Ted had a special place in his heart for his dogs. He loved them dearly and doted on the affection they so freely gave him. Their companionship brought him joy, and he was always happy to give them plenty of attention in return.

His years were marked by the people, places, and activities that were part of his everyday life, leaving behind memories that will remain with those who knew him.

Left to cherish Ted’s memory are his children and their partners, Deanna & Steven Hughes and Ronni Klowoski & Andrew Nickle; his special friend, Rose Sumner; grandchildren, Theodore Smith, Thomas Smith, Matthew Hughes, Sabrina Hughes, Michael Murray, Jacob Atkins and Justin Atkins; many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and friend, Eleanor Dykes. In addition to his parents and his wife, Ted was preceded in death by his daughter, Janey Smith; son-in-law, Timothy Klowoski; grandson, Stevie Hughes; brothers, Bob Lipe, Darrold Lipe, Jerry Lipe, Denny Gibson; and baby sister, Darlene.
