Thomas William Baray

Thomas William Baray of Caro, age 78, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, at home, surrounded by his family. Born on September 28, 1946, Thom grew up in Traverse City and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1964. Soon after, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Constellation aircraft carrier. He spent the final two years of his military service stationed in the Philippines, returning to the States in 1971. Determined to continue his education, Thom enrolled at Central Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching. He went on to teach 3rd and 4th grade, worked as a substitute and special education teacher, and even learned the trade of shoe cobbling. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty, he also worked in concrete, waterproofing and restoration, and cherry picking.

Thom later returned to school at Western Michigan University and earned his master’s degree in psychology. He applied his passion for helping others in many ways throughout his career, working at Huron Behavioral Health, supporting those struggling with addiction in Jackson, and ultimately serving as a psychologist at the Caro Center, where he retired in December 2015. He was a dedicated union representative and advocate for his colleagues at the Caro Center. A proud veteran, Thom was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Moose Lodge. He was deeply political, never shy about his views, and always willing to engage in a spirited debate.

Thom had a rich and varied life outside of work. Music was his greatest passion. He was a proud member of the Men of Music choir in Midland and a collector of string instruments — including guitars, ukuleles, and banjos — which he loved to play. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: good beer, hot wings, and meaningful conversation.

He will be remembered for his beautiful soul, warm heart, and selfless nature. A hilarious smart-ass with a sharp wit and a knack for dad jokes, Thom had a stubborn streak and was a world-class procrastinator — even if he had the “I’m going to do it.” attitude. But more than anything, he was always there for others, a true friend, and a steady, loving presence in so many lives. Thom leaves behind a legacy of compassion, humor, and music. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Thom leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Monique Baray; sister, Nancy Baray Gudith; nieces & nephews, John (Katie) Pickerd, Jennifer (Allen) Davis, and Scott (Steph) Gudith and their families; best friends, Shannon & Jason Emery and their daughter who was like a granddaughter to Thom, Estee Emery; and many friends. In addition to his parents, Thom was preceded in death by his sister, Janet Marie Pickerd.

In keeping with Thom’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2025 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro.
