Thomas Dale Nichols of Caro, age 93, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2025 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community. He was born December 26, 1931 in Salem, Indiana, the son of the late Noble and Mary (Land) Nichols. Tom graduated from Caro High School in 1950. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, Tom pursued higher education at Central Michigan University, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in education. His passion for teaching and leadership led him first to Bad Axe Public Schools, then he joined Birmingham Public Schools where he served with distinction; eventually becoming the Department Chair of Mathematics until his retirement in 1993. He had a great love for all math, publishing and co-publishing several textbooks.
Tom became a Mason in 1952, a Shriner in 1991, and joined the Loyal Order of the Moose in 1993. He was a proud member of the Eagles, Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the American Legion, always finding ways to stay involved and give back to his community. Tom served as the Director of the Conservation Committee at Canada Creek Ranch. He was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and belonged to both the Michigan Education Association (MEA) and the National Education Association (NEA).
Tom was an avid golfer, always on the lookout for golf balls, enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved to grab a cold one with friends on a weekday afternoon at the Moose and was always up for a trip to the casino. Tom had a great time on trips to Las Vegas and with his buddies at the “shack” up north. He was a huge University of Michigan fan and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Tom will be remembered for his quiet strength, his sharp mind, and his unwavering commitment to education, service, and fellowship. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, dedication, and kindness.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of over twenty-five years, Leianne (Sanback) Nichols; children & their spouses, Barbara & Jeff Chapp, Thomas & Stacey Nichols, and Catherine Nichols; stepchildren, Keven & Angela Culbert, Corinne & Scott Bach, Taylor Lambert & Neal Scott; and grandchildren, Laura, John, Andrew, Madilyn, Nicholas, Kristin, Logan, and Scarlett.
