Thomas "Tom" William Schafer, of Sebewaing, passed away on November 16, 2021, at the age of 83, at Courtney Manor with his family by his side.
Tom was born in Pigeon, the son of Earl and Mary (Drabek) Schafer. He attended Pigeon High School, where he played football and basketball. He proceeded to serve his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corp.
Tom married Janice Florence Decker on November 24, 1966 and they would have been married 55 years next week. They were both members of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Tom worked for the Huron County Road Commission for 29 years. He enjoyed many years of coaching summer girls softball, supporting USA athletics and was one of Michigan States biggest fans. He enjoyed fishing, deer and duck hunting, but most of all, playing with and supporting his grandchildren.
Tom created many great memories as a family being able to travel, including a Caribbean cruise, a trip to Disney World and fishing on a trip to Alaska.
To carry on his legacy, Tom leaves his loving wife, Janice; daughters: Gayle (Stephen) Torgerson and Gwen (Brent) Vermeersch; grandchildren: Erin Balzer, Nylah and Taryn Torgerson and Bayne Vermeersch; also survived by Timothy, Shannon and TJ Schafer, along with many nieces and nephews.
Tom was welcomed home to heaven by his parents, along with his sister, Barbara Rowe, brother, Robert Schafer, and brother-in-law, Gerald Decker.
Visitation will be Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Juengel-Mellendorf Funeral Home in Sebewaing from 2-8pm.
The funeral service will be Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Juengel-Mellendorf Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 1pm with a service at 2pm. Pastor Heather Nowak will be officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sebewaing.
Memorial donations may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church, Sebewaing Fire Dept. or Sebewaing Ambulance.
