Velma Durst, age 94, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Satchells Christian Retirement Home, following a lingering illness. Velma was born April 11, 1916 in Fairgrove, the daughter of the late Louis & Mary (Kuzma) Cheek. She was united in marriage with John Durst in Fairgrove in 1936. Velma and John continued to live in Fairgrove for the next few years before moving to Saginaw. After John and Velma retired in 1975, they moved to Grayling for several years, then to Phoenix, Arizona for about twenty years, before Velma returned to Caro for the last two years. John preceded Velma in death on February 4, 2006. Velma enjoyed being outdoors, her many hobbies and was a dedicated walker. Velma is survived by one sister and one brother, Clara Nagy of Vassar, Louis Cheek, Jr. and his wife, Jane, of Unionville; two special friends from Arizona, Helen Maddingly and Marie Immel; and many nieces and nephews that will remember Velma for her kind and gentle nature. In addition to her husband, Velma was preceded in death by four sisters and their spouses, Mary & Cheatem Deathridge of Warren, Irene & Harold Cummings of Saginaw, Frances & George Baranic of Bad Axe, Florence & Wallace Horne of Lapeer. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Peg Satchell, and all her staff, for their kind and loving care in making their home, hers. God bless you all and American Hospice for their compassionate care.
