Vernita Katherine Currey, age 98, of Sebewaing, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016, at Hampton Manor in Bay City.
Vernita was born June 22, 1918, in Brookfield Township, daughter of John W. and Katherine (Schnepp) Gettel. She was confirmed on March 1932 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. She married Carlton Currey on July 14, 1945. He preceded her in death in May 2003. She owned and operated a beauty shop in Saginaw and Sebewaing for many years. Vernita was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed traveling in winter months with her husband to Arizona, Florida and Texas, golfing, needlework and playing bridge.
Vernita is survived by her 2 sons: James (Fran) Currey of Aberdeen, North Carolina and Donald (Joanne) Currey of Chelsea, Michigan; grandchildren: Kelley (Anthony) Blackburn of Urbandale, Iowa, Jonathon (Michelle) Landon of Fort Collins, Colorado and Matthew Landon of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; 4 great grandchildren: Ava, Claire, Harper and Riley; and several nieces and nephews.
Vernita is preceded in death by 5 brothers and 4 sisters: Roland, Harold, Gerhard, Wilmer and Donald Gettel, Erma Sting, Esther Ainsworth, Dorothy Burns and Milda Gettel.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Juengel & Mellendorf Funeral Home in Sebewaing, from 3-6pm.
The funeral service will be 11am on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing.
Burial will be at the church cemetery.
