Vernita Ruth McPhail, 95 of Owendale, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the Cartwright Hospice Place in Saginaw.
Born in Brookfield Township on August 25, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Myrtle (Strauch) Wissner, and attended Brookfield School. On June 10, 1940 she was united in marriage to Daniel John McPhail at the St. John Lutheran Church parsonage in Kilmanagh, and he preceded her in death on October 28, 1963.
In her younger years, Vernita worked at the Owendale Hotel. She then worked for J.P. Burroughs at the Bach Elevator and in the Elkton office, retiring at age 72. She enjoyed making rag rugs with her loom and spending time with her family. She often worked in her yard.
Vernita was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linkville (Pigeon), where she helped with the preparation and mailing of the church newsletter and taught Sunday School in her earlier years. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid.
Her survivors include her children: Daryl (Faith) McPhail of St. Charles, Charles (Lynn) McPhail of Houston, Texas, Kathy (Sid) Heyl of Bay City, Thomas (Elaine) McPhail of Bay City, and David McPhail of Jackson; daughter-in-law, Joan McPhail of Owendale; 13 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; siblings: Arlene Ross of St. Clair, Nina Alexander of Linden, Maxine (Vern) Winters of Sebewaing, Patricia Sontag of Cass City, Don (Alice) Wissner of Owendale, Glen (Jean) Wissner of Sebewaing, and Gerald Wissner of Pigeon; sisters-in-law, Katie and Patricia Wissner; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sons, James and Robert McPhail; sisters, Esther Cochrane, Mildred Polley, and Aldine Voss; and brothers, Owen and Kenneth Wissner.
The Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Boyer officiating. Burial will follow in Silver Lawn Cemetery, Sebewaing.
