Vincent "Ray" Huizar of Akron, age 84, passed away suddenly on Monday, November 7, 2016 at his home. He was born January 22, 1932 in Poteet, Texas, the eldest son of the late Antonio A. and Geronima (Martinez) Huizar and brother to Ermina (Daniel) Monville, Edward (Elsa "Jane"), Jerome and Antonio Huizar. Ray's family moved from Texas when he was a young boy to this area, finally settling in Akron and has lived there since. For the last eighteen years, he and his wife have enjoyed spending winters and much of the year in Florida, He was united in marriage with the former Marjorie Turner on May 10, 1957 in Angola, Indiana, and she survives him. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. Ray was employed with General Motors in Flint and retired as a tool crib manager after thirty-five years of service. He was a life member of Fairgrove and Ocala, Florida VFW Posts, the Vassar Golf and Country Club, Rolling Greens Golf Club in Ocala, Florida, and in his younger years, coached Little League and assisted with his son's Boy Scout troop. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, deer hunting, traveling, bowling, visiting and reminiscing with friends, and especially loved time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ray was extremely proud of his Native American heritage, and was the sixth generation descendant of Pedro Huizar who carved the Rose Window in the San Jose Mission in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to his loving wife of nearly sixty years, Ray is survived by six children, David (Roberta) Crosby, Lee Ann (Reicke) Ryers, Tammy Sheridan, Bryan (Laura) Huizar, Cindy Wood, Roxanne (Ed Westerby) Huizar; eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In keeping with Ray's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the Akron Village Hall, 4380 Beach Street, Akron, MI 48701, with military honors at 1:00 p.m. under the auspices of the U.S. Army and the Fairgrove VFW Post 7486. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider contributions to the Huizar Family Discretionary Fund, where monies received will be used to create a memorial in his name.
