Virginia May Thiel, 89 of Pigeon, passed away Friday, March 13, 2015 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe.
Born in Lockport, New York on June 26, 1925, she was daughter of Frank William and Florence Magdeline (Stoeckle) Pankratz. She attended Niagara Falls Elementary and Junior High Schools, graduated from Niagara Falls High School, and attended New York Business Institute. During the early 1950's Virginia served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. She was past president of Delta Theta Rho, and a former member and past president of the Lasalle VFW Auxiliary as well as the Niagara County VFW and Erie District VFW.
On September 12, 1953 she was united in marriage to Martin F. Thiel at Niagara Falls, New York and they moved to Pigeon. Martin preceded her in death on August 5, 1998.
Virginia worked as a receptionist at Scheurer Hospital for many years. She was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon, and past president of St. Francis Borgia Altar Society. She was also past president and former board member of Scheurer Hospital Auxiliary and Scenic Golf & Country Club Ladies division. Virginia was a member of the Pigeon Worth While Club and chaired the Red Cross Blood Bank for many years.
She is survived by a brother-in-law Donald (Gahl) Thiel of Bay City and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Walter John Pankratz.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at OLPH St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon, with Fr. Rob Paré officiating. Visitation at the church will begin at 12:00 noon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
