Walter Lehner, age 80, of Pacific Grove, California, formerly of Unionville, passed away June 28, 2019, in California.
Walter was born August 12, 1938, in Bay City, to Joseph and Anne (Spengler) Lehner. As a child, Walt ran a cucumber business with his brother in their front yard. He was an all-star football running back and was the team captain in high school. In the late 1950s he almost received his pilot's license from taking classes at the Sebewaing Airport. After graduating from Unionville High School in 1957, he joined the United States Army for 6 months, was a member of the Army Reserves for 7 ½ years and then attended Central Michigan University. Walt enjoyed cooking and baking (especially German rye bread), was an amateur photographer, was a world traveler, and was passionate about the southwest, Native American culture and old ruins. He loved jazz music and was a dancing enthusiast. He was a committed Volkswagen driver and a "pal" to Tom Hanks. Walt had a gift to gab and was a friend to all!
Walter is survived by his 3 children: Jeff Lehner of California, Tracy (James) Meinecke of Midland, and Julie Lehner of Woodland, California; 4 grandchildren: Kuoni and Lux Lehner Wooten, Evan and Hannah Meinecke; granddogs: Lucy and Bear Lehner; brother: Roy (Berit) Lehner of Seattle, Washington; and nephews: Mark and Christian Lehner.
