Walter L. VanHouten age 74 of Elkton died Wednesday morning, September 29, at his home with his family by his bedside.
He was born October 5, 1935, at the home of his parents the late Clare and Ruth (Petty) VanHouten in Waterford Twp., Oakland County.
On February 28, 1974, he was united in marriage to Cynthia J. McNeil in Bad Axe.
Walter retired from General Motors in 1994 after 23 years of service. They moved to Elkton in 1991, and he commuted to work until retiring. After retiring, he became a carrier for the Thumb Blanket for several years and then for the Huron Daily Tribune 6 years. In his free time he enjoyed fishing when possible and loved taking in his grandchildren's ball games.
Surviving are his wife, Cynthia; his daughter, Hannah VanHouten of Elkton; three grandchildren, Andrew Cricken, Walter and June VanHouten all of Elkton; a brother, David (Nancy) Caksackkar of Lake Orion and two sisters, Donna Vanhouten of Pontiac and Sherry (Gary) Clark of Auburn Hills. Preceding him in death was his step father, Ollie Caksackkar.
A funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 PM Friday, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton where friends may call from 2:00 PM until the time of service.
