Weldon "Gunner" L. Nimtz, age 86, of Sebewaing, passed away Sunday evening, August 3, 2025 at Brookdale Senior Living Center in Bay City.
Weldon was born November 23, 1938 in Sebewaing Twp., to the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Essler) Nimtz. He is a 1957 graduate of Sebewaing High School. After graduation, Weldon attended Central Michigan University, where he played football for one year. Following college, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Hood, TX and was in Germany from 1962-1964.
After completing his military service, he returned to Sebewaing and worked at Sebewaing Light and Water Company for 41 years as a Plant Foreman. Weldon was a member of the American Legion Post 293 and New Salem Lutheran Church, where he held various leadership roles on the church board. Known for his love of sports, Weldon enjoyed playing fast pitch softball in his younger years, playing cards with friends in retirement, watching the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and Michigan Football. He was also a passionate supporter of the USA Patriots, coaching JV football and encouraging the girls' softball teams.
Weldon is survived by his 3 nephews: Larry (Rita) Nimtz, Dave (Kathy) Nimtz and Duane (Lori) Nimtz; 5 great nephews/nieces: Shaun (Karen) Nimtz, Shannon (Rob) Knapp, Morgan (Trae) Herglund, Brooke (Nick) Nimtz and Joshua (Kirsten) Nimtz; and 7 great-great nephews/nieces: Gavin and Aubrey Nimtz, Alana Knapp, Elaina Herglund, Connor and Liam Sonntag and Isla Nimtz. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bryce Nimtz.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at New Salem Lutheran Church, 222 E. Grove St., Sebewaing. Visitation will begin at the church at 1pm until the time of service at 2pm. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sebewaing. Pastor William Mayhew will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to New Salem Lutheran Church.
