William Albert "Buck" Deming, 94, of Sebewaing, passed away February 7, 2024 at his son's home surrounded by family.
Buck was born on January 26, 1930 in Bay Port to Albert Sr. and Stella (Beadle) Deming. He married Julie Blehm on February 5, 1954. She survives him.
Buck enlisted in the US Army in 1948. With one year left in his enlistment, his unit was deployed to Korea. On the second day in Korea, his unit was captured by the enemy. He spent the next 3 years as a prisoner of war. He returned home to a hero's welcome with a humble heart. He was a Past Commander of the VFW Post #4115 in Sebewaing and a Life Member of both VFW and American Legion Post #293.
Buck spent many years as a sheet metal worker. After retiring he served his community as a small engine repairman into his 80's. He enjoyed fishing the Saginaw Bay for walleye and perch and walking around Sebewaing greeting everyone he met.
Buck is survived by his son, Douglas (Christine) of Sebewaing and daughter, Diane Walker of Cadillac; grandsons: Ashley (Jamie) and Andrew (Christina) of Sebewaing, Earl and Raymond Fauver of Cadillac; great grandchildren in Sebewaing and Cadillac; brothers: Frank (Wilma) Deming of Bay Port, Herb (Elaine) Deming of Caro; sisters-in-law: Sue Wiese of Sebewaing and Kathryn Umphrey of Clio; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Ann; sisters: Daisy Hinton, Grace Finkbeiner and Agnes Killingbeck; and brothers: Darl, Albert, Pete and David Deming.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Juengel-Mellendorf Funeral Home in Sebewaing from 4pm-8pm. The funeral service will be Friday, February 16, 2024 at the funeral home with Justin Kuhl officiating and military honors to follow. Visitation will begin at 10am until the time of service at 11am. Burial will be at the New Bay Port Cemetery just outside of Bay Port.
The family would like to recognize the staff at Bay View Gardens Assisted Living who helped him feel at home and Heartland Hospice for the compassionate care he received in his last months.
